AeroFarms recently completed a state-of-the-art facility in Newark, NJ, perfectly poised to serve the NY Metro area. The facility is the world's largest indoor vertical farm for leafy greens. To support substantial interest from national retailers, AeroFarms also plans a significant scaling of our business, including facilities in other cities and countries in the near future. The company is dedicated to enabling local production at a commercial scale in markets throughout the world. 


Job Description 

We are looking for an experienced and talented plant scientist to provide scientific direction and leadership for research projects involving flowering fruits and vegetables. The position is part of our Research & Development Department in our new state-of-the-art facility in Newark, NJ. This position will be responsible for all aspects of research and will be responsible for managing work of a lab assistant. You will be held accountable for optimizing growth of new plant varieties and for developing processes to germinate, pollinate and harvest at scale. 

In this role, you will join a talented team of scientists and will work cross-functionally to ensure success of long-range goals and strategies. You should have a strong background in high throughput growing, horticulture, plant sciences or plant physiology. 

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate expertise in applied science and leadership in data analysis and integration efforts. He/she will be an energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high standards and good judgment. Responsibilities

  • Develops, executes and analyzes experiments to optimize yield of flowering fruit and vegetable plants
  • Defines method for screening new varieties, including standardizing procedures and reports
  • Builds and manages relationship with seed suppliers and nurseries.
  • Manages equipment upgrades to lab
  • Reports findings internally in a collaborative environment
  • Contributes to patent applications
  • Collaborates with engineering and other disciplines to develop future generations of growing equipment
  • Remains up-to-date on developments and interests in the indoor ag market

You have:

  • A passion for plants and have spent the last 5 years in plant research focused on small fruits and/or berries
  • BS in Horticulture, Plant Sciences, Plant Physiology or a closely related discipline.
  • A portfolio of examples of your work and research
  • A demonstrated knowledge and experience with operating controlled environment agriculture systems.

 

You may also have:

  • MS or Ph.D. in Horticulture, Plant Sciences, Plant Physiology or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience working with engineers on prototyping equipment/tools preferred.
  • Expertise in high throughput imaging of plants considered a plus.
  • 10 years' experience researching plants grown in Controlled Environment Agriculture
  • Experience working with Priva environmental control systems
  • Experience setting up $250K+ in test lab equipment to analyze chemical content of plant tissue and nutrient
  • Experience with objective measurements of taste and texture of fruits.
  • Thorough knowledge of plant growing, disease prevention, and pest remediation, especially IPM principles
  • Experience growing baby greens, micro greens, living lettuces and herbs.
  • Experience with scheduling planting and harvesting to meet customer demand.
  • Experience with food safety and HACCP protocols
  • Experience managing lab technicians / growers in a greenhouse
  • Several years' experience with statistical analysis software
